Still time for Govt to reinstate ICMSA on key EU group – Neville

FinenGael TD for Limerick, Deputy Dan Neville is writing to the Taoiseach and Agriculture Minister, Brendan Smith, urging them to seek an additional place on the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) so that the ICMSA can take its place, instead of being replaced by a representative of Birdwatch Ireland.

“I believe there is a facility for the EESC to increase its membership and I am calling on the Taoiseach, who nominates Ireland’s members, to seek an additional place on the Committee so that the ICMSA can be reinstated.

“It is unthinkable that the dairy sector would be excluded from a key group which feeds into EU policy at a time when the industry has serious challenges.

“Taoiseach Brian Cowen and Agriculture Minister Brendan Smith have failed to stand up to the Greens on the replacement of the ICMSA with a representative of Birdwatch Ireland. In fact they should have sought an extra place for the Green nominee in the first place instead of trying to elbow the ICMSA.

“However there is still time to make this right before the completion of nominees this week. I am urging them to contact the Council of the European Union to seek an extra place for Ireland so that the ICMSA can be included.”
