It was with deep regret that I learnt this morning of the death of Dr. Garret Fitzgerald former Taoiseach and Minister for Foreign Affairs.
I knew Dr. Fitzgerald well as he was a member of the Fine Gael Parliamentary Party when I was elected to the Oireachtas in 1989. Garret was true patriot, he was an icon of decency and high honour in public life. His fluency in economics was balanced by his humility, the general warmth of his personal family life, his commitment on this island and between Ireland and Britain reached its conclusion this week with the visit of Queen Elizabeth to Ireland.
Dr. Fitzgerald had a deep understanding of Irelands capacity to influence international affairs through co-operation and partnership. He was particularly committed to developing Ireland’s role in the European Union of which he was a devout supporter over many years.
In 1992 at his last attendance at the Parliamentary Party before the General Election of that year I accompanied him from the meeting to our offices and I vivedly remember our discussion.
