Samaritans was awarded the European free-to-caller number for people in emotional distress (116 123) by the European Commission / Comreg in 2008
Over the past number of years, Samaritans has worked to secure a commitment from all of the main telecoms to provide this number on a free basis. In 2012, an agreement was reached among six of the main relecom companies to deliver this number ib a free-to-caller basis for two years from commencement date in 2014 (this is likely to be end-March)
The teecoms involved are eircom / Meteor. 02, Vodafone. 3 Mobile and BT
Ahead of the national launch of 116 123, Samaritans is undertaking a ‘test’ of the number. The test is being carried in four district area: Dublin 8/12, Limerick City and County, Tipperary North, County Clare and Waterford City.
