Nevillle Welcomes appointment of Director of Mental Health Services

Neville welcomes appointment of Director of Mental Health Services
Appointment will give mental health and suicide prevention attention it deserves

Fine Gael Limerick TD and President of the Irish Association of Suicidology, Dan Neville, has today (Friday) welcomed the appointment of Stephen Mulvany as Director of Mental Health Services within the HSE. Deputy Neville added that the appointment will help give added priority to the areas of mental health and suicide prevention.

“This is a very welcome appointment, which was first recommended in A Vision for Change; the policy document which is driving the Government’s approach to mental health services. Mr Mulvany will be responsible for directing national mental health services, including the implementation of the Government’s programme for mental health services.

“The is the first time the overseeing of mental health and suicide prevention policy has been elevated to this level. It is a clear indication of the Government’s view that mental health programmes must be given high priority in terms of policy development and implementation.

“The appointment of a Director of Mental Health Services will also be crucial in ensuring that the additional €35 million being ring-fenced for mental health services each year is properly spent. We cannot allow funds to be re-directed to other areas, as has happened in the past. Up until now, the provision of mental health services through the HSE has been fragmented. This new Directorship will ensure a co-ordinated, national approach.

“I wish Mr Mulvany well in his new appointment.”
