Fine Gael Limerick TD and President of the Irish Association of Suicidology, Dan Neville, has expressed his sadness at the death of John Mc Carthy, founder of Mad Pride Ireland.
“It is with deep regret that I learned of the death of John McCarthy, founder of Mad Pride Ireland. I have known John for over a decade and over that time I was hugely impressed by his commitment to de-stigmatising mental ill health and promoting the need for more modernised mental health services in Ireland.
“As a user of mental health services himself, John brought credibility to his contribution to the debate which was valuable, colourable and at all times sincere. I met him on several occasions last year when his health was failing. His spirit was as sharp, intense and vibrant as ever.
“John has made an incalculable contribution to the debate on reducing the stigma of mental illness. We should honour his memory by intensifying the campaign.
“Thank you, John, for your friendship, for your encouragement and for sharing your poetry since we met more than 10 years ago at a meeting of Amnesty International.”
