Dan Neville TD President of Irish Association of Suicidology hopes that these pages will disseminate information about suicide and suicide prevention to inform interested people so that it is not ignored by the statutory authorities who deal with health, education and the environment. Suicide prevention is everybody's responsibility and the tide can only be turned by concerted cooridinate action by all parts our society.

Children under 18 years comprise 25% of the population i.e. 1 million[1]. Overall 1 in 5 children in Ireland has a mental or behavioural disorder at any one time[2].  International evidence demonstrates that mental illness is young people’s number one health issue, representing over half their total burden of disease (combining both fatal and non-fatal measures)[3]. Three quarters of lifetime cases of mental illnesses emerge by the age of 24[4]and, across Europe, the overall prevalence of mental disorders in adolescence is in the region of 15 to 20%[5]. The Irish State has responsibility for Suicide prevention.  The Government has a responsibility to research the reasons for and the need to introduce prevention programmes - Sunday Independent Letter to Editor 22nd May 2005.

Young Fine Gael campaign "TALK" on suicide and parasuicide prevention launched in May 2005.    On 27th and 28th August 2005, Young Fine Gael as part of its suicide awareness campaign "TALK" completed a sponsored walk for AWARE from Galway to Limerick.  Included in the photographs are Dan Neville TD. In October and November 2005, the Joint Oireachtas Sub-Committee on suicide held hearings in preparation for the completion of its report on suicide in Ireland.  Herewith are the presentations made to the subcommittee together with members questions and contributions.
